Karst Investigations, Cave Expeditions and Archive Visits

During their research stay in March, NoW visited the Škocjan Caves in Slovenia, where the river Reka disappears underground and from there continues under the name Timavo. They also undertook an extensive tour through the Karst together with Nicola Bressi, director of the Natural History Museum of Trieste, a guided visit to the Randaccio pumping station in San Giovanni, and an adventurous excursion into the “Luftloch” — an access point to the underground river Timavo located 300 meters below the surface — professionally guided by members of the Speleological Association Trieste.

In the city, they gained deep insight into the precious holdings of the City Archive of Trieste with the support of Adelio Paladino. After studying historical plans and drawings, they revisited a section of the ancient Acquedotto Teresiano, which supplied water to the city before its rapid expansion in the mid-19th century.
