Trieste is a terminal station that is served by regular trains from Venice or from Udine, respectively the national or international routes beyond. A third approach comes via Ljubliana / Slovenia, with local trains that however stop at the border in Opicina / Opčine and are connected with the city by Trieste’s public bus service.
After arrival at Trieste Centrale, one can take a taxi (choose a smaller car if availiable, because of the steep and narrow street) or take busline number 8, direction Roiano, until terminal station (5 stops) which is directly at the beginning of Scala Santa. From here it is 5min rather steep footwalk.
To get to the taxi stand and bus stop, leave the station directly at the end of the platforms on the left side.
by bus
Many international buslines pass through Trieste, most of them run by Flixbus: basically Venice from west, Ljubljana from northeast, Pula / Croatia from southeast. The busterminal is located just beside the railway station. Regarding city transport, look at „by train“.
by airplain
The Trieste airport is called Ronchi dei Legionari, approximately 30 km west of the town. There is train service and a busline (nr. 652) to reach the city, with connection every half hour. Both means arrive at Trieste Centrale, regarding city transport, look at „by train“.
by car
Using a Navi, it is recommended to enter the railway station and only then change the destination to Scala Santa, because Navis tend to propose the whole Scala Santa as preferred route: the upper part of this street however is really not an adequate approach for strangers to the local situation (the red line on the map).
Directly beneath the house Nr.44, there is an extended carpark. It is private and therefore not for public use, but it is possible to enter and take out luggage etc. Usually, one can find a parking lot directly in front of the house or behind the curve 100m upwards. For drivers who are not used to steep roads however, it is recommended to find a parking lot or a garage place down in Roiano.
